The Challenge

Self-published authors face a frustrating catch-22: readers discover books through reviews, but getting those first reviews is nearly impossible without existing visibility.

Traditional approaches (begging friends, paying for questionable services, or waiting months for organic traction) leave authors stuck in obscurity. Kevin Chertkow came to NetDev Studio with a vision: create a community where self-publishers help each other succeed through authentic, honest book reviews.

The concept was compelling, but turning it into a sustainable business required solving complex technical and marketplace challenges.

Our Solution

We partnered with Kevin to translate his vision into a working product. Our focus was on validating the core marketplace mechanics before building out secondary features.

Key Technical Decisions

  • Ruby on Rails monolith: Chose speed-to-market over microservices complexity. A well-structured monolith let us iterate rapidly while maintaining code quality.
  • Points-based economy: Designed the "Bounty Points" system to create natural marketplace liquidity. Authors earn points by reviewing; they spend points to receive reviews.
  • Marketplace integrity systems: Built multiple layers of protection including AI detection, similarity matching, and fraud prevention.

After proving the concept, NetDev Studio transitioned from contractor to technical co-founder. We took ownership of product development, product management, and growth strategy, aligning our success directly with Book Bounty's success.

Results

Book Bounty has grown from concept to a thriving marketplace.

The platform successfully creates value for both sides of the marketplace: authors get the reviews they need, and reviewers earn the ability to promote their own work.

"I've worked with all types of developers for years, both in-house and third-party. And I have to say, hands down, the folks at NetDev Studio are some of the best I've had the pleasure of working with."

"NetDev Studio brought my vision to life and continues to evolve Book Bounty into a platform that genuinely helps self-publishers succeed."
